A world leading adapter manufacturer in Hong Kong is providing design, manufacturing and testing services to numerous global PC vendors. In order to streamline its Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design process, the IT department is seeking for a solution that can leverage the existing Lotus Domino Document Manager platform to provide automated circulation, approval and version control on CAD drawing files.
Challenge
The engineering department needs to produce and release a large number of designs every day. In order to streamline the design process, they need a system to provide automation on circulation, approval and version control on CAD drawing files for Printed Circuit Board (“PCB”). The IT department is seeking for a solution that can leverage the existing Lotus Domino Document Manager platform for supporting the CAD design process.
Solution
With our strong experience on Lotus Notes, our consultant helps the IT department to define the functional requirement of the system in a few weeks’ time. Based on the original structure of the system, we compose a system design specification by creating a class model to inherit the features of Document Manager and to implement the custom features. Teamed up with a mature Lotus Notes development team and QA department throughout system development cycles, our Lotus Domino development team develops systems with the following features.
- Client Server base file sharing
- Checkin and checkout of CAD drawing files with
parent-child relationship
- Workflow approval for both logical and physical CAD
drawing file
- Archive for different design stage
- Index search by model and design
name
In addition, our Lotus Notes Domino expertise helps to resolve the remote access issue by adopting a distributed model for data repository. This design ensures excellent performance in sharing CAD drawing files among users in different locations such as Hong Kong, China and Philippine.
Now, engineers can easily circulate, approve and release the CAD design files with the new system. When the system is being enhanced to extract component information from the design files to the Design BOM database, more and more modules will be built on top of it for integrated product design management.
